~The Lost Boys Fiber Herd~

Did you know?

  • In ancient Incan times, alpaca fiber was used to make clothes for the royalty and was known as “The Fiber of the Gods”.
  • It is as soft as cashmere, yet lighter in weight, stronger, and warmer than wool.
  • Alpaca fiber comes in 22 natural colors.
  • Alpaca fiber contains no lanolin.
  • Alpaca fiber is naturally fire retardant.
  • It is in high demand from hand spinners, knitters, and fiber artists for both the raw fleece and yarns.

What started as my need to make yarn from scratch has turned into an almost overwhelming herd of amazing and gorgeous fiber boys that roam our back hill. They get daily neck rubs and treats and I get their lovely fiber once a year to make anything my heart desires. They have joined us from many different places in the US. Some we handpicked and others simply came our way.

I've nicknamed them the Lost Boys because so many of them were lost. We're technically not a rescue, but I can't seem to turn anyone away. Many of our boys came from homes where they were either not needed, unwanted, or just had no purpose. We strive to give them a purpose by employing them as fiber artists and friends.

Our first big shearing is behind us and we are slowly working through all that fiber.  By spring we should have rovings for the spinners, yarn for the knitters and crotcheters and the Lost Boys will have won your hearts. Come visit these sweet creatures and learn for yourselves the beauty of alpacas.

Do you have a Lost Boy? Email us to discuss the possibility of placing him in our fiber herd.
